DramSoc Glossary
When people first join the DramSoc crew, they often find that we use many
terms that they are unfamiliar with. Therefore we have built up a glossary of
the terms, and what they refer to.
Anything we've forgotten?
Email me.
Act 6 - 6 channel dimmer rack. We have
4 of them in 2 brilliant little flight cases.... Ideal for getting down hill
quickly.
Bodge - Any piece of cable that converts
one type of connector into another
Camloc - 3 Phase mains supply that requires
5 separate cables: one for each phase + neutral + earth. It's nice and easy
to get a 410v jolt of this, as each connectors is large enough to shove a finger
in. For this reason we favour it's beautiful younger sister, Powerlock, instead.
Choke Room - The room on the same landing
as the storeroom, which houses the house dimmers and lots of scaff!
Deadpile - The pile in the corner of the
storeroom that contains all the broken things.... Feel free to fix any of them
when you have a moment ;-)
DMX - "Digital MultipleX". It
is not actually the name of a signal or cable but of the USITT protocol for
digital multiplexing of theatre control signals. See USITT
and Abstract DMX Help
Dogs - used to clamp two pieces of steel
rope together. The size of the dogs used has to be correct for the diameter
of the rope being clamped.
Figure 1 - If you ever get referred to
figure 1, then take a look at this photo....
I think it's clear enough
Gaffa - Ideal for taping people up with.....
especially in the bar after a strike! Also used for holding cables down, fixing
things, and patching up steal deck.
Gantry - This balcony type bit at the back
of the concert hall. The Cinema projector is up there as well.
Gantry Room - This is the room at the back
of the concert hall where we keep all our large road boxes
Gay Bodge - Mainly this refers to the short
bits of white XLR that have Male connectors on both ends.
Girly Juice - Most of the crew have a Leatherman
(Wave, PST
or Supertool)
however it seems all the girls on crew get a Leatherman "Juice".
Therefore they have girly juices....
Grelco - A 15A adapter which enables 2
15A plugs to be plugged into 1 15A socket. Available in both black and white.
Lasso - Electrical Tape
Lecci - Electroflex Cable (refers to the
style of connector). Basically a 6 channel multicore for lighting power cables
Lesbian Bodge - Read the "Gay Bodge"
entry, then take a guess!
LX Gallery - The balcony that is on stage
left of the concert hall stage.
Powerlock - Type of high current cabling
- we use it in the Great Hall. Consists of 5 seperate thick cables, one for
each phase, neutral and earth.
RMD - Stands for "Rapid Metal Decking"
apparently. Don't ask me why! Basically they are the big lumps of Orange girder
that we hang the trusses off in the Great Hall.
Scaff - Everyone knows what this is for,
however DramSoc crew also commonly dream about hitting people (especially DJs)
round the head with large lengths of it.... :-)
Scates - Trolleys which all the bulky
stuff gets put in, such as speakers and scaff.
Speakon - The type of connectors on the
end of our speaker cables
Spider - Either plug spider or socket spider
and they have a leci connector on one end and 6 15A sockets/plugs on the other
end.
Splinges - are Split Hinges, they are hinges
with a removable pin. They are used to join scenic items together. Splinges
provide a good means of fixing flats together, especially if the flats are positioned
at an angle to each other. The disadvantage is that if a splinge is mounted
high on a flat someone has to climb a ladder to drop the pin in.
Steel Deck - Those heavy bits of staging
that no-one like carrying
Storeroom - This is the DramSoc
"office". At lunch time it's the most exciting place to be on
campus....... honest!
Tails - On the end of a sound multicore
you have lots of connectors of varying types. This are refereed to as "tails".
Trellco - Like a Grelco, but this time
it's 3 plugs into 1 socket
TRS - "Tough Rubber Sheathed"
15A Extension Cable
XLR - Microphone cables
Oh... and don't forget a whole collection of terms such as "Gus'd",
"Brown'd" etc... This means that it's was broken by a certain member
of crew.
